Did You Know the New Route 72 Stretch is Called The E. Bartlett Barnes Highway?

Route 72 is an unusual state highway in the western part of the Greater Hartford area.

It is an L-shaped route with a north–south section in Plymouth and Harwinton and an east–west section from Bristol to New Britain.

The new four-lane median separated boulevard is known as the Barnes Highway.

A legislative bill officially named the extension in Bristol The E. Bartlett Barnes Highway.

Mayor Ellen Zoppo said “Bart Barnes Advocated for the extension of Route 72 as the editor of the Bristol Press.”

Barnes graduated from Yale University in 1929.

He was publisher and president of the Bristol Press, retiring in 1985.

Barnes also served as chairman of the Bristol Board of Education, director of the Connecticut Council, Freedom of Information; 67-year member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Bristol Rotary Club; and 50-year member and former deacon of the First Congregational Church in Bristol.

Barnes at age 96, died on February 9, 2004.
