Burlington Public Library Announces July Programs and Events

Burlington Public Library
Summer Reading is in full-swing and the library is not slowing down in July! There’s still plenty of time to enjoy a variety of engaging programs and earn raffle tickets and library “book bucks” to put towards a variety of prizes. In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find more information about how to participate in Summer Reading as well as a preview of some of the exciting programs we’ll be offering. Included in all the program descriptions are links to sign up for the event.


Children’s Program

Children up to grade 4 will receive a reading calendar when they sign up. For each day that they read, they will receive one library “Book Buck.” Use the bucks throughout the summer to shop our summer reading store and pick the prizes you want to win!
Tween-to-Teen Program
Students in grades 5-12 will earn a raffle ticket for each book that they read. They can also earn raffle tickets for attending a program or for volunteering at library events.
Adult Program
Adults will have a chance to win a $50 VISA gift card this summer. They will earn one raffle ticket for each day that they check out adult materials or for each adult summer reading activity that they attend.

Galaxy Coasters
Monday, July 1st at 5 PM
Entering grades 5-12
Make unique coasters that look like they come from outer space using alcohol-based inks.

Family Fun Night – 3D Movie Night!
Tuesday, July 2 at 6:30 PM
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing this summer, we will be showing a 3D viewing of Fly Me to the Moon, an animated movie in which three young house flies stow away on the famous Apollo 11 flight to the moon. 3D glasses, as well as popcorn and beverages, will be provided! All ages welcome. Registration required.

Friday Film Series – Roman Holiday

Join us as we travel the world through film. Each week will feature a movie from a different country. As part of the Adult Summer Reading program, have your passport ‘stamped’ each time you come for a chance to win a gift card.

 Overwhelmed by her suffocating schedule, touring European princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) takes off for a night while in Rome. When a sedative she took from her doctor kicks in, however, she falls asleep on a park bench and is found by an American reporter, Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck),who takes her back to his apartment for safety. At work the next morning, Joe finds out Ann’s regal identity and bets his editor he can get exclusive interview with her, but romance soon gets in the way.

Bring your own white canvas sneakers to create cosmic sneakers using just Sharpies and rubbing alcohol.

Family Fun Night – Stepping Stones Museum
Tuesday, July 9 at 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM
Stepping Stones Museum will present two different programs on Tuesday, July 9th – one for  younger children and one for older. Please read the different descriptions below and sign up for the one that is right for you! Space is limited!
Grades PreK-2
Above-and-Beyond Astronomers
Become astronomers and discover the peculiar patterns happening in our universe. Take part in a living model as you replicate the movement of the sun and moon as they orbit and rotate in the sky.
Grades 3-5 
Paper Airplane Building
Get ready to build your knowledge of aerodynamics. Explore the scientific methods as you combine elements of early flight with engineering design. Conduct trials, make predictions, and record data on lengths and types of flights.

Summer Salads with ShopRite
Wednesday, July 10 at 6:30 PM

Shana Griffin, ShopRite of Canton’s registered dietitian and nutritionist, will be here to show us how to make a healthy and delicious summer salad using fresh ingredients. Bring your own bowl/container from home and bring your salad home to enjoy!

Baseball Story Time with Sting from the New Britain Bees!
Friday, July 12th at 11 AM 
Join us for some baseball/sports themed stories and craft. We will have a special guest visit from Sting, the mascot of the New Britain Bees baseball team. Sting will be encouraging children to read over the summer so they can earn a free ticket to a New Britain Bees games as a reward! All ages welcome. Registration requested.


Friday Film Series – The Hundred-Foot Journey

Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is an extraordinarily talented and largely self-taught culinary novice. When he and his family are displaced from their native India and settle in a quaint French village, they decide to open an Indian eatery. However, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the proprietress of an acclaimed restaurant just 100 feet away, strongly objects. War erupts between the two establishments, until Mallory recognizes Kadam’s impressive epicurean gifts and takes him under her wing.

Virtual Tour of Elizabeth Park
Monday, July 15th at 6:30 PM
Join us for an extraordinary opportunity at the library! Peter Winne, Head Gardener for Elizabeth Park, will be here to take us on a virtual tour of the historic park’s gardens – specifically the rose garden.
Looking for an opportunity to stop and actually smell the roses – let’s meet at Elizabeth Park for a self-guided tour on Saturday, July 20th.
This program is part of the Adult Summer Reading program. All in attendance earn a raffle ticket towards our summer reading prize.

Healthy Eating with ShopRite of Canton

ShopRite’s Registered Dietician and Nutritionist, Shana Griffin will be here to discuss healthy eating and the importance of staying hydrated during the summer. She will also be bringing us some samples to try from the Canton store!

Family Fun Night with Turtle Dance Music!
Tuesday, July 16th at 6:30 PM
Space! The Cosmos for Kids is a techno-space-dance-party for kids and teens. Each song includes dancing, music technology and information about our universe to a thumping beat. Audience members will meet aliens from outer space, sing about our solar system, participate in a rap battle with the sun and learn about the differences between revolution and rotation. Each song in the show is accompanied by hands-on, visual, and sensory experiences designed to help kids learn and have fun at the same time. Registration is required.

Full Moon Yoga
Wednesday, July 17th at 7 PM
Join Yoga instructor Heather Tartarelli as she guides us through a series of movements to honor July’s full Buck Moon.
Please dress comfortably and bring your own Yoga mat.

Foodies – Chunky Moon Pies

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 moon landing, make delicious moon pies with chunky chocolate chip cookies, homemade marshmallow creme, and melted chocolate. (Marshmallow creme recipe uses raw egg whites so Marshmallow Fluff® will be available as a substitute).

In the 1930s, the Grand Budapest Hotel is a popular European ski resort, presided over by concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes). Zero, a junior lobby boy, becomes Gustave’s friend and protege. Gustave prides himself on providing first-class service to the hotel’s guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there. When one of Gustave’s lovers dies mysteriously, Gustave finds himself the recipient of a priceless painting and the chief suspect in her murder.

Star Wars Trivia Contest

‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away’ ‘ the Star Wars super fan was created. Show off your Star Wars knowledge in this Trivia Contest using Kahoot!, an online interactive game program. If you aren’t familiar with Kahoot! already, there will be a warm-up demonstration before the actual contest begins. Participants must bring their own internet-ready electronic devices. 1st through 5th place winners in teen and adult will win Star Wars-themed prizes.

Family Fun Night – Craft & Story Night

Join us for some outer space stories and our featured craft, Glow in the Dark Soothing Sensory Bottles. An outer space themed snack will be served.

The Elderly Brothers Present: Songs of the ’50’s & ’60’s!
Wednesday, July 24th at 6:30 PM
Long-time popular solo artists T-Bone Stankus (guitar) and Brian Gillie (keyboards) have teamed up as The Elderly Brothers, serving up mint-condition ‘oldies” rock ‘n’ roll, pushing the envelope of sweet surprise with pitch-perfect harmonies and soulful improvisations as fresh as the originals. No sleepwalk down memory lane with these guys. Their radiant renditions and audience interaction are unsurpassed. Enjoy the solid groove and upbeat ’50’s and’60’s rock-hop repertoire that have made each of them such innovative and  celebrated performers.

Some British retirees (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy) decide to outsource their retirement to exotic — and less expensive — India. Lured by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and imagining a life of leisure in lush surroundings, they arrive and find that the Marigold is actually a shell of its former self. Though their new home is not quite what they had imagined, the retirees find that life and love can begin again when they let go of their pasts.

Star Wars Origami

Family Fun Night – Universe BINGO!
Tuesday, July 30th at 6:30 PM
Come join us for a fun-filled night of universe themed BINGO! Refreshments will be served and prizes will be awarded!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover & Breakfast
Wednesday, July 31st by 6 PM – Drop off stuffed animal
Thursday, August 1st at 10 AM – Breakfast 

Ever wonder what would happen if stuffed animals had a sleepover party? Well, now you can find out when you drop off your favorite stuffed animal for a sleepover at the library! Drop your stuffed animal off for a night of fun and come back the next morning to pick them up and enjoy breakfast with us while we fill you in on the fun they had!

Trivia Night
Wednesday, July 31st at 6:30 PM
Adults 21 and over are invited for a night of trivia at the library. Test your knowledge in teams of 2 to 5 people and see who will become the champion of our first-ever trivia contest.
The ‘Friends of the Library’ will be selling beer and wine. Feel free to bring in an appetizer or dessert to share with the group.
Registration is required. Please register as a team and put all (first) names on the ‘name’ line.

Join us for a story time for babies and their caregivers.
Each week will feature stories, songs, finger plays and rhymes. We will end with free-play with
