The Growing Trend of Farmers’ Markets: Bristol Takes Heed

Farmers’ markets have surged in popularity in the United States during the past 30 years.

Since the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) began collecting information on farmers’ markets in 1994, the number of markets increased from 1,755 to more than 4,385.

It is estimated that more than 3 million consumers shop at these markets, and about 30,000 small farmers and food entrepreneurs earn a partial or full living selling their local products at farmers’ markets

Farmers who engage in direct sales and consumers who buy directly with them was a win-win last year.

Consumers get the highest quality food, and farmers get a premium price for their products. Expect to see that at the Bristol Farmer’s Market with more vendors adding every year.

The Bristol Farmer’s Market runs from June 23 @ 10:00 am – October 27 @ 1:00 pm

Each Saturday morning from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. local farmers sell their goods.

This year the Market takes place on the parking lot of the former mall site across from the police station. Before it was held at the now unused Patch site on the corner of North Main Street and Riverside Avenue.

The move was needed due to the construction of a new road on the site and construction of a new Bristol Hosptial building on Main Street.

As previous years, patrons can get fresh fruits and veggies, as well as home-made soaps and local honey.

Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu posted in part “Our farmer’s market has seen a lot of foot traffic. You can pick up your fresh locally grown produce, fresh flowers, baked goods, handmade soaps, beef jerky, and jams.”
