Purchase by Bristol Hospital on The Former Mall Site Paves The Way For New Roads

Shovels in the ground will finally happen next month on the former mall site.

After almost a decade of waiting for the City to develop the former mall site, Bristol Hospital has stepped in and purchased a large portion of the now called Centre Square for development. The hospital plans to construct a 60,000 square foot two-story building that will house an Ambulatory Care Medical building.

Because of the Hospital deal and possible future development, the City will install a new access road on North Main Street across from Bristol City Hall. The road cuts across the property from North Main Street and Laurel Street to Riverside Avenue. 

The access road could cost taxpayers $2.7 million to provide access to the new Bristol Hospital Ambulatory Care Center.

Additionally, a grant has been submitted to the State. At the moment no decision has been made.

Sources close to the deal say Bristol Hosptial reached out to Renaissance Downtowns  — the former developer — to construct the medical building years ago but an agreement could not be reached due to a high and unrealistic price tag.

Once Renaissance skipped town, Bristol Hosptial reached out to the City pitching the plan. After quick negotiations and zoning approvals, a final Purchase & Sales Agreement was approved and signed by both parties, it paved the way for the new access road.

The road construction is under the supervision of the City of Bristol Department of Public Works, Engineering Division and designed by Milone & MacBroom.

The new road will be about 1,000 feet long and contain many streetscape components including trees, brick pavers, a center median made of “stamped asphalt,” decorative lights, landscaping, granite curbing, and a bus stop location.

The new access road will match the current look of North Main and Main Streets. The City will also update the traffic signal at North Main Street and Laurel streets.

The new approach for the former mall site is a dynamic, pedestrian-oriented downtown that supports new retail, housing, office, and/or recreational opportunities.
