The Mum Festival Committee, in keeping with this years’ theme of “Home is Where the Heart Is,” is so very proud and excited to be welcoming home Bristol’s own Brittany Decker.  Brittany will cut the ribbon to open the Mum Festivities on Thursday, September 21, at the historic Memorial Boulevard Field with special appearances throughout the weekend.

Brittany will then lead the 56th Annual Mum Festival Parade on Sunday, September 24.  The marquee parade is a highlight of the jam-packed, activity filled, family friendly and epic fall Mum Festival weekend. The parade will begin at 1:30 pm and book-ends the celebrated Mum Festival Carnival & Vendor Extravaganza.

“On behalf of the all-volunteer Mum Festival Committee, we are so excited to welcome Brittany home to open the festivities and lead off the 2017 Mum Festival parade,” said Jack Ferraro, Mum Festival Chairman. “Brittany typifies what we mean when we say, “Home is Where the Heart Is” and we are so honored that she will be a part of this year’s Festival.”

Raised in the city and a graduate of Bristol Eastern High School, Brittany Decker is proud to call Bristol her home. She is currently pursuing her career as a news anchor in Birmingham, Alabama at WVTM NBC 13 news.

Prior to moving south, Brittany worked as the morning anchor at WGGB ABC 40/FOX 6 and CBS 3 (Western Mass News) in Springfield, Massachusetts. She also reported out in the field and was a member of the First Warning Weather team. Brittany started her work on television at WTNH-TV and MyTV 9 in New Haven, CT where she won the 2011 “MyTV9 Star” competition.

Many may remember that Brittany was named Miss Connecticut 2010, and represented both Bristol and the state of CT at the national Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. Additionally, she served as host to Bristol’s Mum Festival in 2004 as Miss Chrysanthemum.  While in Bristol, she was also involved with the United Way Youth Board, the Bristol Boys and Girls Club, as a member of the cast in the annual OM show and was involved in many other service projects.

Brittany is a graduate of Western New England University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in mass-media communications. She recently completed courses at Mississippi State University for the broadcast meteorology program.

When she is not busy with the news, Brittany enjoys music. In Western Massachusetts, she sang in an acoustic duo called “Smith & Decker.” She has finished three full marathons and often pushes wheelchair athletes while running. She also has completed century rides on her bicycle to show support for fallen officers. For the past few years, Brittany has traveled to Haiti with a team of doctors to run medical clinics in isolated villages in the country.

“I am so honored to be part of this year’s Mum Festival,” commented Ms. Decker. “It’s something that I grew up looking forward to each and every year with my family. I’m so very excited to see everyone in the city both old friends and new, and to part of all the festivities! I will always be proud to call Bristol my home.”

“Planning for this years’ Mum Festival is fully underway and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever,” continued Jack Ferraro. “Look for more information to be released throughout the summer.  And remember, “Mum’s the Word!”
