The Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce Business Builders networking group will hold a special breakfast event with Bob Backlund of the WWE on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Nuchie’s Restaurant, 164 Central Street, Bristol, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Bob Backlund, a WWE Hall of Fame Inductee, will give a motivational speech on the power of being positive. According to Backlund, “When you believe you can do something you can.”
Bob Backlund began life as a poor farm boy in the little village of Princeton, Minnesota. He was a below-average student with a lackluster work ethic and a bad attitude, who hung with the wrong crowd and made a lot of bad choices. He was a kid whose life was headed for disaster—until a local coach took interest in him, suggested that he take up amateur wrestling, and offered to work with him if he promised to stay out of trouble.
While working out at the YMCA in Fargo, North Dakota, where he wrestled for North Dakota State, Backlund met a well-known professional wrestler, “Superstar” Billy Graham. At Graham’s suggestion, Backlund pursued a career in professional wrestling.
He made his WWE debut in 1977 and quickly became a fan favorite. On February 20, 1978, Backlund found himself standing in the middle of the ring at Madison Square Garden with his hand raised in victory as the newly crowned World Wide Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion.
The man Backlund pinned for the championship was none other than Superstar Billy Graham. Backlund recently added author to his title as his new book, The All-American Boy: Lessons and Stories on Life from Wrestling Legend Bob Backlund, will be released on March 29th.
